BOOK REVIEWS

Tattooist of Auschwitz
by Heather Morris

Aryan Dahal

I know that many of you reading this have been guilty of dozing off or being uninterested in history class before. Well, I too have, although my experience of reading this book is a completely different story. And “a completely different story” is a fitting way of comparing ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ with other Holocaust stories that you may have read before, being able to ignite the fire of romance, and compassion within such a dark, and dire time period.

This book is based on a true story, the story of a man known as Lale Sokolov. Lale told his story over the course of three years to the author, Heather Morris. Lale is an intelligent, charming ladies’ man however he is a Jew. Upon his arrival at Auschwitz, the biggest German concentration camp, and the main setting for this story, he immediately stands out to his fellow prisoners. In the camp, he works for the Germans as their ‘Tatowierer’, the tattooist, and his job is to mark the prisoners that enter the camp.

The Forest of Enchantments
by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Linyesha Bansal

Chitra Banerjee Divakaurni's epic 'The Forest of Enchantments' is a modern retelling of Ramayana. It emphasizes on Sita's side of a story and delves into the spectrum of emotions she felt during her journey. Along with the one-sided narrative, she frequently emphasizes her husband, Lord Ram, who, in my opinion, reveals a lot about his personality. After reading the book, I would consider her the biggest devotee of Ram.

The protagonist is portrayed as a devoted, considerate, and compassionate woman. But also, a woman of principles, and one that was a staunch supporter of equality. Sita transforms from a daughter, almost to someone with skyscraping serotine levels, to a warrior and finally, a rebel. She possessed such great traits and morals which is something that made her the ideal candidate for the position of Queen.

Korean Pop, widely known as ‘K-pop’ has turned into a worldwide cultural phenomenon over the last few years. The craze for K-pop initially started in 1992 when a group named ‘Seo Taiji and Boys’ debuted. Their songs seemed unique and unconventional to a large range of people as they consisted of different styles and genres of music, Korean and foreign musical elements, and Korean lyrics.
