For the K-pop Curious

Korean Pop, widely known as ‘K-pop’ has turned into a worldwide cultural phenomenon over the last few years. The craze for K-pop initially started in 1992 when a group named ‘Seo Taiji and Boys’ debuted. Their songs seemed unique and unconventional to a large range of people as they consisted of different styles and genres of music, Korean and foreign musical elements, and Korean lyrics.

As the years progressed, so did the liking for K-pop. Multiple groups and artists debuted and began to create astounding melodies. In 2013 there was another breakthrough in the Korean pop industry when Park Jae-sang, also famously known as ‘PSY’ released the song ‘Gangnam Style.’ The song received humongous attention internationally due to its funny choreography not to forget its funky beats.   

After the release of ‘Gangnam Style,’ K-pop got more recognition. Slowly groups like BTS, Blackpink, Twice, Exo, SHINee, Seventeen, NCT, and many more had entered the industry and proceeded to break multiple records and set great benchmarks.   

My liking towards K-pop began when I accidentally pressed on a video that had a compilation of performances by different artists who were attending a Korean music awards show. I was mesmerized by the artists' vocal and rapping skills and by their striking visuals. The thing that I was most astonished by was the fact that there was a blend of both Korean and English lyrics in almost every song that had been performed, not to forget the fact that each artist had sung and danced at the same time.  

The craze for Korean pop has increased significantly during this generation simply since it consists of artists that are multi-talented. Unlike artists that sing and perform other genres of music, it is essential for K-pop artists to know how to dance and sing spontaneously. They go through rigorous training to be able to successfully sing their songs while dancing. People who are going through this process of training are known as ‘K-pop Trainees.’ Some Korean music agencies even make acting a compulsion so the artists can create better and more realistic music videos for their fans to enjoy.  

In conclusion, the K-pop industry has come a far way in being able to attract a wide range of audiences, most of which are a part of the newer generation. The unconventional melodies created and performed by many artists have played a great role in boosting the craze for K-pop. When I listen to K-pop songs I feel happy, so I hope that all the K-pop fans out there feel the same way!
